Gypsy Music
An Illustrated talk by Dr. Punita Singh
“Gypsy" and "Music" are words that pair together harmoniously but conjure up different images and sounds for different people.  From traditional Romani songs associated with events, festivals and rites of passage, to music expressing existential angst; from syncopated foot-tapping Flamenco to Manouche Swing and Gypsy Jazz; from Hungarian Cigányzene, Romanian L?utari, Fanfare and Manele, to Bulgarian Chalga and Balkan Pop, gypsy music defies being confined within boundaries. In this illustrative talk, Dr Punita Singh will present an overview of the diverse genres and hybrid styles often clubbed under the rubric, “gypsy music". The India connection and influence of gypsy music on western classical composers will also be discussed
Punita is a musicologist, linguist, psychoacoustician, editor and educator based in New Delhi. Special areas of interest and expertise include Christian sacred music, music of the Renaissance, twentieth-century music, Flamenco, and contrastive aspects of Indian and Western classical music
