The talk brings to focus a new source of water which is invisible – the sandy floodplains of the river. Over 5 km wide and 50 to 100 metres deep, running the length of the river, 40 per cent of its volume is water that is naturally stored, and recharged with the annual monsoon. A local and perennial source of quality drinking water whose potential is yet not wholly understood and which can non-invasively provide water to over 500 cities that exist on the floodplains of rivers. The first such project is presently nearing completion in the northern Yamuna flood plain at Palla in Delhi NCT.

The talk will also encompass the impact of this ecological breakthrough on river cities all over the world
