Sairat is a path breaking film which brings caste discrimination and caste-based violence to the fore in mainstream Marathi cinema. Said to be the highest-grossing Marathi film till date, director Nagaraj Manjule sets the film in his own village, Jeur in Karmala Taluka of Solapur district, Maharashtra to tell the story of a fisherman's son and a local politician's daughter who fall in love against the restrictions of caste hierarchy
