Beyond Brics: Tapping the full potential of the India Brazil Partnership

With H.E. Mr. André Aranha Corrêa do Lago, Ambassador of Brazil

Chair: Shri Pramit Pal Chaudhuri, Foreign Editor, The Hindustan Times and Distinguished Fellow & Head Strategic Affairs, Ananta Aspen Centre

India and Brazil share a close and multifaceted relationship at a bilateral level, in the plurilateral fora such as BRICS, BASIC, G-20, G-4, IBSA, Biofuture Platform and in the larger multilateral bodies such as the UN, UNESCO and WIPO. The long relationship is based on shared values of democracy, economic growth and welfare of the people. To this effect, a number of high level visits have also taken place between the two countries.

The upcoming visit of President Bolsonaro as Chief Guest on India’s Republic Day 2020 signifies that India’s strategic partnership with Brazil has continued to intensify in 2019. However, USD 8 billion bilateral trade remains below par. Both countries also share similar concerns about China’s rise and the need for the IMF and the World Bank to be more inclusionary.

Against this backdrop, the Brazilian Ambassador to India will talk about how India and Brazil could strengthen their bilateral relations in different realms including trade, politics, culture and security going beyond the mandate of BRICS
