The lecture will examine the myth that widely assumes that yogis have been practising innumerable ?sanas since time immemorial. Dr. Birch will present and discuss much of the important textual and material evidence for ?sanas in contexts of yoga and asceticism (tapas). Early references to ?sanas and its role in various religions and systems of yoga will be discussed
