The Ramayana has been retold across languages and in all genres. Recitations are key to elaborating its meaning: for example, the story of Rama is performed in north India through Navaratri in October, and in Kerala the text is recited through the month of Karkidakam (July–August). A one-day online workshop of readings of texts from southern India and Southeast Asia is being convened in the context of a new collection of essays, The Multivalence of an Epic: Retelling the Ramayana in South India and Southeast Asia (ed. Parul Pandya Dhar, 2021).
