Listening to History: The Music and Culture of the Silk Road
By Hans Utter
Encompassing thousands of miles, diverse cultures, and centuries of history, the Silk Road linked cultures from China to Egypt, transporting language, music, religion, and art along with mercantile goods. This presentation will examine an array of cultures and music along the Silk Road, exploring how specific musical instruments, performance genres, and associated cultural milieus were transplanted and transformed in diverse regions. The living traditions and re-imagination of Silk Road in contemporary arts and culture will demonstrate its current relevance and influence
