Her Voice: Embedding Gender Justice in the Academy

A dialogue with Prof. Najma Akhtar, Vice-Chancellor, Jamia Millia Islamia; Justice Gita Mittal, former Chief Justice, High Court of Jammu and Kashmir; Mr. Eric Falt, Regional Director, UNESCO New Delhi Office; Prof. N.V. Varghese, Vice-Chancellor, National Institute of Educational Planning & Administration; Prof Krishna Menon, Amedkar University Delhi and Dr. Meenakshi Gopinath, Life Trustee, IIC and Director, WISCOMP

The panellists will deliberate upon the role of Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) in India’s quest for gender equality. They will share their insights on a range of equality concerns including What are HEIs doing to bridge gender gaps and break stereotypes, especially in the STEM fields? What role does policy play in catalysing these changes? What are the links between gender-just and enabling campuses and workspaces?

Christian Music Through the Centuries
Illustrated lecture by Nicholas Hoffland, writer, design and music resource person, business communicator, art curator and cook. 

Nicholas will take viewers on a musical journey using audio and film clips of Christmas music, written by western classical composers, from the early music of the 12 & 13th centuries through the renaissance, baroque, classical, romantic and modern periods ending with current popular music.

Geet-prakars: Genre in Gwalior Gharana of Hindustani Classical Music
Gwalior Gharana of Hindustani classical music is considered the father of all other gharanas belonging to khayal genre. In addition to khayal compositions, there are many other types of compositions that were developed and are practiced by the Gwalior musicians today. This illustrated lecture will demonstrate how styles such as khayalnuma, tappa, tap-khayal, trivet, Chatrang, Rag-sagar, and Swar-sagar have evolved from this salient gharana.

The illustrated lecture will be presented by Shashwati Mandal, senior vocalist who has trained under Pt. Balasaheb Poonchhwale, Smt Purnima Chaudhuri, Gundecha Brothers and Pt. Madhup Mudgal

Presentation by Shri Ashok Vajpeyi, a Hindi poet-critic who has written critically about classical music in Hindi and English besides establishing institutions of music and organising major events


Shri Vajpeyi will speak on the influence the classical music has had on him for nearly half a century as a poet, as a rasika, as an organiser etc. He would discuss aspects of my closeness with maestros such as Kumar Gandharva, Mallikaarjun Mansur, Zia Moiuddin Dagar in particular. The changing ethos, the dynamics of innovation, the declining knowledge about the classical music will also be analysed
