This talk aims to explicate how a remote mountainous landscape around the upper reaches of the Ganga River in the Himalayas transformed into an exalted region evoking deep faith in millions of Hindu pilgrims. From approximately the third century BCE up to the thirteenth century CE, numerous stone monuments, steles, and statues were erected in this landscape. This talk explores the processes by which these monuments and sculptures evoked mythic worlds, embedded historical memories, enhanced the mountain range’s appearance, and altered its symbolic significance

With Pandit Kedar Bodas (Khayal)
Born in a family of professional musicians, Kedar Bodas received initial ta'lim from his grandfather Pandit Lakshmanrao Bodas who was a direct disciple of Pandit Vishnu Digambar Paluskar of the Gwalior gharana. Subsequently, he learnt from his father Pandit Narayanrao Bodas, Dr. Ashok Ranade, Pandit C. P. Rele, Pandit T.D. Janorikar and Pandit Bhalachandra Pendharkar, thus extending the corpus of his musical knowledge across several gharanas.
For this mehfil, Kedar has chosen to start with raga Shri and then present three rare ragas - Purva, Malashri & Sangam Kedar - featuring an eclectic selection of bandishes composed by Pandit Bhaskarbua Bakhle, Pandit Ram Marathe and other stalwarts of the Gwalior, Agra and Bhendi Bazar gharanas

The talk brings to focus a new source of water which is invisible – the sandy floodplains of the river. Over 5 km wide and 50 to 100 metres deep, running the length of the river, 40 per cent of its volume is water that is naturally stored, and recharged with the annual monsoon. A local and perennial source of quality drinking water whose potential is yet not wholly understood and which can non-invasively provide water to over 500 cities that exist on the floodplains of rivers. The first such project is presently nearing completion in the northern Yamuna flood plain at Palla in Delhi NCT.
The talk will also encompass the impact of this ecological breakthrough on river cities all over the world

Directors: Ruchi Shrivastava & Sumit Khanna
Produced by the Public Service Broadcasting Trust
Recipient of the Rajat Kamal Award for Best Environment Film, National Film Award 2015-16
Seldom does a man’s deeds loom so large that they dwarf the very mountains from where they emanate. One such person is Chandi Prasad Bhatt, who has strong claims to being the first modern Indian environmentalist, and arguably also its greatest. One of the pioneers of the Chipko movement, the film seeks to decipher the life, the motivation and work of a man who silently changed the paradigm of environment activism in India and has been described by Ramchandra Guha as one of the finest Indians alive today
