`Mother India'
Speaker: Shri Gopalkrishna Gandhi, former Governor, West Bengal
Icon, metaphor and palladium, "˜Mother India' has personified a conjured past as well as a future epiphenomenon. Mother India was the title of Katherine Mayo's controversial 1927 book which Gandhi described as "˜the report of a drain inspector'. It was also the name of the celebrated 1957 film produced and directed by Mehboob Khan in which Nargis reached an unexpected pinnacle of achievement.
The lecture will explore the voltages of imagination and the outages of dismay that lie beneath that never-to-be-reviled name, which carries a halo and also, perhaps, like Nargis as Radha, a crushing weight
