Arvind Desai Ki Ajeeb Dastaan (The Strange Fate of Arvind Desai/India)
(118 min; 1978; dvd; Hindi with English subtitles)
Director: Saeed Akhtar Mirza

Recipient of the Critic’s Award for Best Film, Filmfare Awards 1979

Arvind Desai is the only son of a rich businessman who deals in luxury handicraft products. His feelings for his father are mixed. While he hates his dominating nature, he admires his power and lack of scruples. The chaotic, bustling underbelly of Mumbai comes alive in this compelling drama about the existential crisis of a young privileged man. Through the ambiguous idealism of its confused protagonist Arvind Desai Ki Ajeeb Dastaan reflects on social injustice and class divide in urban India
