Opening Remarks: Prof. K. Vijayaraghavan, Principal Scientific Adviser, Government of India
Chair: Shri Shyam Saran, Life Trustee, IIC

A tiny fraction of Indian women born to relative privilege have taken up the space they deserve in many fields. But even in this thin sliver of society where women are educated and have some degree of autonomy, stereotypes limit, not entry, but progression of women in science. My encounters and relationships with women who support, inspire, challenge and stand by me are central to my life and work. Demonstration of professional competence and our cultural constructs appear at odds, and I have been fortunate having many women and some men who believe that women can and will get things done.

First in a new series of lectures organised in collaboration with Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser, Government of India and Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi. The year-long series of lectures and panel discussions hopes to inspire budding and aspiring women scientists, doctors, and engineers and also to discuss key issues relating to the inclusion and advancement of women in science, medicine and engineering
