Buddhist Sanskrit Manuscripts of Nepal: Continuity of Ancient Indian Textual Traditions in the Himalayas

The Buddhist manuscripts of Nepal are the only surviving original literary heritage of Mahayana Buddhism, preserved for over 1,500 years. The lecture will highlight their historical context, their links with Indian Buddhist traditions, and their role in preserving ancient wisdom. It will also cover medieval Buddhist scholarship, Newar manuscript culture, Nepal’s contributions to manuscript preservation, indigenous literature, repositories, and digital databases.

Prof Shanker Thapa is the first Dean of Lumbini Buddhist University, has taught for 40 years and held fellowships in Seoul and Tokyo. Since 2010, he has been digitizing endangered Sanskrit manuscripts and has authored 18 books, 26 chapters, and over 100 research articles on Buddhism worldwide

He has trained and assessed operations for development and media workers in restricted environments, including six years in Myanmar with independent digital media, and integrates digital security into Asia Centre’s activities while coordinating with research and partnership managers.

The talk will be about the role of foreign architects, largely British, in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries in India. The late nineteenth century was marked by the stabilization of British presence in the sub-continent and a further spread of influence of a Western way of life and thinking in certain sections of Indian society. This is amply reflected in the architecture of that period.

Speaker: Rajesh Luthra is an architect and urban designer, Principal at Development Consortium, and Visiting Professor at the School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi. He is also a published writer and consultant to the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation.

Moderator: Dr. Punita G. Singh, acoustician, musicologist, linguist, editor and educator based in Delhi. She has taught at Washington University in the US, McGill University, Canada and is currently, Visiting Faculty at Ashoka University, Sonipat
