A discussion with Shwetasree Majumdar, Founder, Fidus Law Chambers; and Dhiranjan Malvey, Media Law and senior journalist

While journalism is considered the first draft of history, photo-journalism is the visual documentation of history. Although the big assignments of participants are centred on news events, the photographs on view are moments in life, capturing fleeting moments

Vignettes of the personal and magical world of Premola Ghose

Inauguration by Shri N.N. Vohra, Life Trustee, IIC on Saturday, 21 January 2023 at 18:30

About the exhibition

An exhibition to celebrate and remember Premola Ghose, ex-Chief, Programme Division IIC, who passed away in 2019. The works  exhibited today, most of them done from 1996 to 2018 reflect her personality as well as her passions: her quirky, often irreverent,  sense of humour, her playful  sense of mischief and eye for the absurd;  her deep interest in history and architecture; her zest for travel both in India and abroad; her love of nature and animals. And last but by no means least, her world at the India International Centre where she worked for forty-odd years, putting her heart and soul into all that she did here. A wonderful storyteller as well, Premola authored a series of travel tales all featuring her quirky ‘Gang’ of animals and their adventures not only in India but also in Europe, Sri Lanka and Japan.

The late landscape artist, Bireswar Sen (1897-1974) centred his creation on portraying the splendour of the Himalayas, although he approached it on a miniature scale. Sen studied under Abanindranath Tagore in Calcutta during the 1920s, where he learned the wash technique. It wasn't until he met the Russian artist Nicholas Roerich in 1932, that he discovered art's enormous ability to connect man with nature. Roerich's Himalayan landscapes were an epiphany. For the rest of his career, Sen strived to achieve harmony while perfecting his highly personal technique.

On display are a selection of original paintings from the collection of Prithviswar Sen and Sarbani Ghosh

Bollywood Photo Culture

Amassed from the streets of Bombay, this growing array of images from the collection of Rahaab Allana highlights movie stills and associated memorabilia that advertised and popularised actors and epic sequences from the original film. Dated largely between the 1950s and 80s, this selection of handmade photographs, including tabloid images, comprises an essential subculture of photography that had mass appeal, many of which were transformed into large film posters, banners and hoardings.

This exhibition, revived on the 195th birth commemoration of photography as a medium was showcased during the centenary of Indian cinema in 2013 with Art Heritage. It is divided into different tropes and styles manifested in a later period of Hindi cinema, an era which saw the rise of a global audience for Bollywood. Affection, Action, Drama, Caricature and Villainy present some of the recurring ‘moments’ that were captured through film photography. These stills, which also travelled as lobby cards and show cards that were pinned up in foyers of cinema theatres, present some of the most unacknowledged forms in the history of the medium. This exhibition features photographs from studios such as Studio Nataraj, Himalaya Talkie Distributors and Pravinchandra G. Javeri, most of which are in Bombay (present day Mumbai). They present prominent actors such as Madhubala, Ashok Kumar, Nargis, Dev Anand, Pran, Mumtaz, Mehboob, Johnny Walker, Om Prakash, Randhir Kapoor, Dharmendra, Helen and Rekha among several others.
