'Does Contemporary Minimalist and Electronic Music have to be boring? Check it out!'

Illustrated lecture by Amb. Gautam Mukhopadhaya, former Indian Ambassador to Syria, Afghanistan and Myanmar. In the course of his life and career, he developed a taste for progressive rock and jazz, Hindustani classical and regional music, and later, South American, some strains of Western classical and religious, African, Arab, Ottoman, Iranian, and South East and East Asian music

Minimalist and electronic typically conjure up sonic images of either repetitive, unchanging, monotonous music in which nothing happens for long periods of time, inducing yawns; or loud, mechanical or 'techno' dance or rave music defined by heavy, deadening drum beats that drive one away. But the two distinct, but sometimes intriguingly related sounds are rich in experimentation and creativity, ranging from early pioneers from the fringes of jazz and world music in the 1960s, to the edges of rock in the 1970s, to the more classical work of people like John Adams, the experimental vocals of Meredith Monk and Pauline Oliveiros, the cerebral yet hypnotic works of Steve Reich, the very 'visual' and often lush and melodic music of Philip Glass using mostly acoustic instrumentation, among others

Lecture and demonstration by Smt Bijoylaxmi Hota, a reputed integrated yoga therapist who has written eleven books on yoga and diet including the best seller, Yoga for Busy People

High blood pressure is a leading cause of death in the world today. A silent killer, it does not give any warning signs while continually damaging our internal systems, sometimes beyond repair. Medication is not the answer as it does not remove the real offender – stress. Besides drugs have their own typical unpleasant side effects. The right yoga on the other hand with specific asanas, pranayams, meditation, yogaindra and mantras provides lasting relief to the body, mind and psyche by removing both the cause as well as the symptoms effectively. Minor dietary changes will speed up the recovery

Dharwad-Kirana Khayal Gayaki: The migration and stylistic evolution of a North Indian tradition in the South

Illustrated presentation by  Srivani Jade

The gayaki currently popular as the Kirana gharana, has its roots in present day Uttar Pradesh. Over the last 150 years, it has flourished in the South, centred around the small town of Dharwad in North Karnataka. Like a river gathering various elements in its path across the country, this Khayal tradition has absorbed the richness and diversity of regional music in Maharashtra and Karnataka, and evolved into a style all its own. The speaker will narrate the story of the evolution of her gharana, and demonstrate the stylistic elements of the Dharwad-Kirana gharana

Hindustani classical vocalist, composer and educator, Srivani Jade is a captivating performer, and story-teller of the Dharwad-Kirana tradition of Khayal. She is a Visiting Artist at the University of Washington (Seattle) and is based in Bengaluru
