(110 min; 1939; b/w; English)
Director: Ernst Lubitsch

With Greta Garbo, Melvyn Douglas, Ina Claire

Recipient of the Audience Award and Golden Train Award for Best Screenplay, Faro Island Film Festival 1939; NBR Award for Top Ten Films and Best Acting, National Board of Review, USA 1939; and Winner of the National Film Registry, National Film Preservation Board, USA 1990. A stern Russian woman sent to Paris on official business finds herself attracted to a man who represents everything she is supposed to detest. The film is known for being one of the first American films which, under the cover of a satirical, light romance, depicted the Soviet Union under Joseph Stalin as being rigid and grey, in this instance comparing it with the free and sunny Parisian society of pre-war years through a delightful affair, full of sparkling wit and wisecracks that blends pratfalls and a sophisticated comedy of manners.

Stealing van Gogh | ( Click here to watch ) | (59 min; 2018; English)

Director: Julian Hendy

Art historian Andrew Graham-Dixon uncovers the truth behind the greatest art heist of the 21st century. In December 2002, two priceless paintings were stolen from the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam in a brutal and audacious robbery.

A brilliant and fascinating look at how stolen art is used as a black-market currency – canvas banknotes, basically – and how it can be used as a crook’s ultimate bargaining chip to reduce a sentence.

An exhibition of photographs by Vijay Jodha

The online exhibition focuses on a contemporary but less noticed facet of public life in Tamil Nadu – art that can be found on the sides of buses crisscrossing the state. The advent of digital printed billboards has spelt the death knell to the careers of Tamil Nadu’s famed hoarding painters. Thankfully their creativity has found a new avenue in the form of murals and public art that has brought life to many old, drab or poorly maintained buildings and in the world of public transport.

Peacewomen of Northeast India
Speakers: Roshmi Goswami, feminist human rights activist and independent researcher known for her pioneering work on women in conflict situations; Patricia Mukhim, Editor, The Shillong Times; women’s rights activist, she was conferred the Padma Shree in 2000 and also received the Chameli Devi Jain Award for outstanding women media person; Pradip Phanjoubam, Editor, Imphal Free Press and author of The Northeast Question: Conflicts and Frontiers

Moderator: Rakhee Kalita Moral, Associate Professor, Cotton University, Guwahati, Assam and a recipient of the Nehru Fellowship, Nehru Memorial Museum and Library

Northeast India’s geo-political emergence as a postcolonial borderland has been attended by long periods of unrest, rebel movements and militarization both in its immediate past and via its older histories of resistance. The region has come to be inseparable from peace negotiations, mediations and accords on account of protracted conflicts and attempts at their resolutions. ‘Peace’ in India’s northeast remains a contested idea appropriated for various, often disparate ends
