In Dekha Gautam Ghose makes a veiled attack against the winds of change sweeping our society. Based on a story by Sunil Gangopadhyay, all the characters in the film are caught in the web of life, sometimes owing to their flaws, or that of their spouse.The film chronicles the life of an ageing poet who has seen the world but is now nearly blind with glaucoma

Amongst the few ethnographic studies on girl’s madrasas in India, the book focuses on unfolding of young women’s lives as they journey from their home to madrasas and beyond. The study problematizes the idealized and coherent notions of piety presented by anthropological literature on female participation in Islamic piety projects. The author’s ethnographic portraits challenge the dominant media’s representation of madrasas as outmoded religious institutions.

 

Hem Borker has completed her D.Phil from the University of Oxford, U.K where she was a Clarendon Scholar. She is Assistant Professor, Centre for Study of Social Exclusion and Inclusive Policy, Jamia Millia Islamia

A Dancer Looks Back: Sharon Lowen’s 45 Years in India, curated by Sanjit Debroy

An exhibition of photographs by Sharon Lowen, well-known Odissi dancer and guru

 

Inauguration on 25 July 2018 at 17:00

 

The exhibition presents a retrospective of never seen before photographs of classical and folk dancers taken between 1973-78 and 1981-90 in Delhi, Kolkata, Imphal, Seraikella, Baripada, creating a historical record of the cultural activity of the time. Before arriving in India as a Fulbright Scholar, Sharon prepared to document her sojourn by including studying photography at the University of Michigan as part of her M.A. Intended to be used in teaching, this documentation has never been shared before as her career as a performing artist took precedence over returning to academia

Khovar and Sohrai Art of Hazaribagh

The traditional art of women artists of Hazaribagh, north Jharkhand. Khovar or comb-cut art is made during the marriage season, a type of sagraffito art using reversed slip pottery technique; and Sohrai a winter harvest art, painted as a ritual thanksgiving for a good harvest. This tradition of painting Khovar and Sohrai art is fast vanishing from the village mud house walls
